From Andijan to Brisbane: Mukhammadazizbek Secures a Four-Year Australian Student Visa

For Mukhammadazizbek Abdujabborov, graduating from school in Qo‘rg‘ontepa was followed by a much bigger step: preparing to continue his education more than 11,000 kilometres away in Brisbane, Australia.

Mukhammadazizbek graduated in 2025 from General Secondary School No. 1 in Qo‘rg‘ontepa District, Andijan Region. He has now successfully secured a four-year Australian Student Visa and will begin a Foundation Program at Griffith College before progressing to the Bachelor of Business at Griffith University.

His study plan was built around his academic background as a recent graduate of Uzbekistan’s 11-year secondary education system. Rather than entering a bachelor’s degree immediately, he chose a Foundation-to-Bachelor pathway that will give him time to adjust to Australian academic standards and prepare for university-level study.

With an IELTS overall score of 6.0, Mukhammadazizbek met the English-language requirement for the first stage of his pathway.

Beginning at Griffith College in Brisbane City

Mukhammadazizbek will begin his Australian education at Griffith College’s Brisbane City Campus, located at 333 Ann Street in the heart of Brisbane’s central business district.

The Foundation Program is delivered over two trimesters and is designed to be completed in approximately eight months. It will introduce him to the style of teaching and assessment used in Australia while strengthening his academic communication, research, computer and independent learning skills.

This preparation is particularly valuable for students moving directly from secondary school in Uzbekistan into an English-speaking university environment. Alongside studying new subjects, Mukhammadazizbek will need to become comfortable with academic writing, presentations, group assignments and managing his studies independently.

The Brisbane City Campus places him close to the commercial and cultural centre of the city. Central Railway Station is within walking distance, and the campus can be reached by train, bus and ferry from different parts of Brisbane. The Bachelor of Business is associated with Griffith University’s Brisbane South (Nathan) offering. Griffith University has advised that this offering is scheduled to be delivered at the Treasury Building at its Brisbane City campus in 2027. The precise teaching location will be confirmed by the University when Mukhammadazizbek progresses to his degree.

This pathway keeps both stages of his education within the Griffith community. Instead of changing to an unrelated institution after Foundation, he can move into his Bachelor program through a connected academic plan.

A 20% Scholarship Opportunity at Griffith University

Mukhammadazizbek’s Foundation results could also lead to a substantial tuition benefit during his Bachelor of Business.

Under Griffith University’s International Academic Merit Scholarship, eligible international students receive a 20% reduction in tuition fees for the duration of their degree, provided they continue to meet the scholarship conditions.

The academic eligibility criterion is a minimum GPA of 4.5 on a seven-point scale, or an equivalent result, in the student’s previous recognised studies. Applicants must also satisfy the academic and English-language entry requirements for their chosen degree.

If Mukhammadazizbek completes his Foundation Program with the required GPA and meets the remaining eligibility conditions, the 20% scholarship can apply throughout his three-year Bachelor of Business.

This gives him a clear target for his Foundation studies. Strong results will not only allow him to progress to Griffith University but may also reduce his family’s tuition expenses across the entire undergraduate degree.

Because Uzbekistan’s general secondary education system consists of 11 years of schooling, Australian universities do not all assess the qualification in the same way. The appropriate route depends on the student’s grades, English-language result, intended course and the admission rules of the chosen university.

The principal options are:

Foundation followed by a Bachelor’s degree: The most common pathway after Grade 11. Students complete an academic preparation program before entering the first year of their degree.
Diploma followed by a Bachelor’s degree: Offered for selected courses and institutions. Depending on the program, a completed diploma may provide credit towards a related bachelor’s degree.
Direct entry into a Bachelor’s degree: Available when the student’s secondary education and any additional qualifications meet the university’s direct admission criteria.

Some Australian universities may assess eligible applicants from Uzbekistan for direct entry using their Grade 11 qualification and academic results. Others may require an additional recognised credential, such as an SAT result, one year of university study or a Foundation qualification.

For example, Southern Cross University may consider eligible Grade 11 graduates for direct Bachelor entry, subject to the course and the applicant’s results. Universities including QUT, Macquarie University, the University of Wollongong and the University of Sydney may require an additional qualification, such as an eligible SAT result, when assessing students with 11 years of education.

Requirements can change between courses and admission periods, particularly for competitive or professionally accredited degrees. Each application should therefore be assessed against the university’s current criteria rather than relying on a single pathway for every student.
