At just 17, Humoyunmirzo Ziyoyitdinov was granted a UK Student Visa for a Foundation pathway leading to a Bachelor of Computer Science at Durham University.

Humoyunmirzo graduated from General Secondary School No. 64 in Mirzo-Ulugbek District, Tashkent, in 2026. Shortly after completing secondary school, he received an offer for the Science and Engineering International Foundation Year, followed by the Bachelor of Computer Science at Durham University.

He achieved an IELTS overall score of 6.0 and met the academic, English-language and visa requirements for his proposed study pathway. Humoyunmirzo will begin his studies in the United Kingdom in September 2026.

His achievement demonstrates how a carefully selected Foundation program can provide young Uzbek students with a structured route from secondary school to a leading British university.

From School in Tashkent to Durham University

Moving from General Secondary School No. 64 in Tashkent directly into the British higher education system is a significant academic transition, especially at the age of 17.

Teaching methods, assessment standards and expectations of independent learning in the UK can differ considerably from those experienced at school. Humoyunmirzo will therefore begin with an International Foundation Year that prepares him for these changes before entering the first year of his Computer Science degree.

This pathway will give him time to strengthen his academic knowledge, English-language ability and study skills while becoming familiar with university education in the UK. The Foundation year is not separate from his long-term plans; it is the first stage of a connected pathway leading to his chosen degree at Durham University.

Science and Engineering International Foundation Year

Humoyunmirzo will complete the Science and Engineering International Foundation Year at Durham University International Study Centre.

The program is delivered over three terms and prepares international students to progress to related undergraduate degrees at Durham University. Students are assessed through examinations, coursework, research tasks and presentations. They also receive support from a personal academic tutor who monitors their progress.

For a future Computer Science student, this preparation is particularly valuable. The degree requires logical thinking, mathematical understanding, academic discipline and the ability to solve complex problems.

After successfully completing the Foundation program and achieving the required progression grades, Humoyunmirzo will advance to the Bachelor of Computer Science at Durham University.

Why Humoyunmirzo Chose Computer Science

Computer Science influences almost every area of modern life. Software, artificial intelligence, cyber security, cloud computing and data technologies are central to how businesses, governments and individuals operate.

By studying Computer Science, Humoyunmirzo will learn how computing systems work and how technology can be used to solve practical and complex problems. The subject goes beyond learning individual programming languages. It develops the ability to analyse challenges, design logical solutions and understand the principles behind modern digital technologies.

The degree can prepare students for careers in software development, artificial intelligence, data science, cyber security, systems engineering and technology consulting.

Computer Science also offers long-term flexibility. Technology changes rapidly, so employers value graduates who understand fundamental computing concepts and can continue learning as new tools, platforms and systems emerge.

Studying at a Russell Group University

Durham University is a member of the Russell Group, which represents research-intensive universities across the United Kingdom.

Studying in this environment will give Humoyunmirzo access to research-led education and an academic community with high expectations. Durham’s Computer Science programs combine theoretical knowledge with practical development and team-based project work.

Students can also participate in computing societies and related activities, enabling them to meet others with similar interests and gain experience outside formal classes. Durham University’s Computer Science courses are recognised by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT.

For Humoyunmirzo, gaining admission to a university of this standing immediately after school is an important achievement. The Foundation pathway will help him approach the Bachelor program with stronger academic preparation and greater confidence.

Why Study in Durham?

Durham offers a different student experience from larger cities such as London. It is a historic university city with a close academic community, allowing students to remain connected to university life while adjusting to living independently.

Humoyunmirzo will have the opportunity to meet students from different countries, experience British culture and develop his communication skills in an international environment. This exposure will be valuable in Computer Science, where professionals frequently collaborate across cultures and work as part of international teams.

Living and studying abroad at 17 will bring new responsibilities, but it will also help him develop maturity, independence and confidence alongside his academic knowledge.

Career Opportunities After Graduation

A Computer Science qualification from Durham University can prepare Humoyunmirzo for a broad range of professional opportunities.

Depending on the interests and technical skills he develops, he may pursue a career as a Software Developer, Data Analyst, Cyber Security Analyst, Systems Engineer, Artificial Intelligence Specialist or Technology Consultant.

These capabilities are increasingly relevant to Uzbekistan, where technology companies, banks, telecommunications providers, government organisations and digital businesses continue to expand. Demand is growing for professionals who can develop reliable software, protect information systems and use data to improve products and services.

An education combining strong academic preparation, technical knowledge and international experience can place Humoyunmirzo in a good position to contribute to this development in the future.

We congratulate Humoyunmirzo Ziyoyitdinov on his admission to Durham University and the successful grant of his UK Student Visa. We wish him every success when he begins his Science and Engineering International Foundation Year in September 2026.
